Hidden Variable Theories: Arguments for a Paradigm Shift

چکیده

Usually the ‘hidden variables’ of Bell’s theorem are supposed to describe the pair of Bell particles. Here a semantic shift is proposed, namely to attach the hidden variables to a stochastic medium or field in which the particles move. It appears that under certain conditions one of the premises of Bell’s theorem, namely ‘measurement independence’, is not satisfied for such ‘backgroundbased’ theories, even if these only involve local interactions. Such theories therefore do not fall under the restriction of Bell’s no-go theorem. A simple version of such background-based models are Ising models, which we investigate here in the classical and quantum regime. We also propose to test background-based models by a straightforward extension of existing experiments. The present version corrects an error in the preceding version. PACS: 03.65.Ta, 03.65.Ud

Security in Quantum Cryptography vs. Nonlocal Hidden Variables

In order to prove equivalence of quantum mechanics with nonlocal hidden-variable theories of a Bohm type one assumes that all the possible measurements belong to a restricted class: (a) we measure only positions of particles and (b) have no access to exact values of initial conditions for Bohm’s trajectories. However, in any computer simulation based on Bohm’s equations one relaxes the assumpti...

Editorial Volume 5, Issue 2

Our Journal's tendency towards the real world in applied linguistics and literary studies should have significant epistemological and methodological consequences in researching the fields. The interest in the real world makes the problems we may have in our everyday lives our 'points of departure' in research. According to my experience of research in our universities throughout their history, ...

Attractive and In - Discrete A Critique of Two Putative Virtues of the Dynamicist Theory of Mind

I argue that dynamicism does not provide a convincing alternative to currently available cognitive theories. First, I show that the attractor dynamics of dynamicist models are inadequate for accounting for high-level cognition. Second, I argue that dynamicist arguments for the rejection of computation and representation are unsound in light of recent empirical findings. This new evidence provid...

Signal-Locality in Hidden-Variables Theories

We prove that all deterministic hidden-variables theories, that reproduce quantum theory for an ‘equilibrium’ distribution of hidden variables, give instantaneous signals at the statistical level for hypothetical ‘nonequilibrium ensembles’. This generalises another property of de Broglie-Bohm theory. Assuming a certain symmetry, we derive a lower bound on the (equilibrium) fraction of outcomes ...

A Methodology for Paradigm Shift to Explain Sustainable University

The sustainable university concept is rooted in prevalent paradigms pertained to economic, social and environmental development, which all focus on systemic thought and rationality; besides, they tend to  discover and solve problems by applying an interdisciplinary approach. However, the epistemic component is what these paradigms have ignored. The purpose of this study is to explain a methodo...
